AI and Deepfake Threats: A Security Professional’s Perspective

By now you have probably used Artificial Intelligence in one way or another. All around us we are starting to see our society seemingly embrace the rise of AI and how it is being incorporated into our daily life. Major companies, such as xAI, are pumping millions and even billions into data centers, and companies that we have come to use in our daily basis are suddenly releasing products with AI built in. When it comes to Information Security it is no different in the embrace of AI. For example, just a few days ago, Kali Linux released Kali GPT which is built into the operating system and meant to help penetration tests.

With the rise of Artificial Intelligence seemingly being used in our daily life it does raise an important concern. Moreover, there are many great benefits of AI but what about the dangers? Threat actors are not individuals who rest and if there is an opportunity to use AI for their own selfish benefit then there are chances that they will use it.

The Rise of Deep Fakes and Impersonations

Imagine that you have a direct supervisor that you work with at your organization. Everyday you hear their voice from meetings, one-on-ones, and you are quite familiar with how they speak. One day, your phone rings and it’s the same caller ID as your supervisor. You pick up the phone and the voice sounds seemingly convincing, but soon enough your supervisor starts to make a request with a sense of urgency that they need you to email them specific documents as they are locked out of their business account and it is very important for an upcoming contract. You go ahead and send those documents but find out later in the day that your boss adamantly claims that they never called you and now you have been phished.

What I just mentioned above is a theoretical scenario of how threat actors could use deep fakes to conduct more advanced social engineering attacks from an industry point of view. However, these attacks are actively happening across the world. One actual scenario of this happening was recently reported to CNN where a financial worker had been duped into paying over 25 million dollars when they thought that they were having a video conference call with their chief financial officer.

The Technical Reality Behind These Attacks

The sophistication of these deepfake attacks is genuinely alarming. Voice cloning technology now requires as little as three seconds of audio to create a convincing replica. Companies like ElevenLabs and Murf have democratized voice synthesis to the point where anyone with basic technical knowledge can generate realistic speech patterns. Video deepfakes, while more complex, are becoming increasingly accessible through platforms like DeepFaceLab and commercial services that can be purchased on the dark web for relatively modest sums.

Threat actors are leveraging these tools in combination with traditional social engineering tactics to create what security researchers are calling “hybrid attacks.” They combine deepfaked audio or video with legitimate-looking caller IDs, spoofed email addresses, and detailed reconnaissance gathered from social media profiles and corporate websites. The result is an attack vector that bypasses many of our traditional security awareness training programs because it exploits our fundamental trust in audiovisual communication.

Current Defense Strategies and Their Limitations

Many organizations are scrambling to implement detection tools, but the reality is that we are currently in an arms race where the offensive capabilities are outpacing defensive measures. Audio deepfake detection software exists, but it often requires the audio to be analyzed in real-time or shortly after the conversation, which is not always practical in a business environment. Additionally, these detection tools have varying accuracy rates and can produce false positives that create operational friction.

Some companies are implementing verification protocols that require multiple forms of authentication for sensitive requests, but these measures can be circumvented by sophisticated threat actors who have done their homework on organizational procedures. The challenge is that we need to balance security with operational efficiency, and overly restrictive verification processes can hinder legitimate business operations.

Recommendations for Information Security Professionals

First and foremost, we need to update our security awareness training programs to include deepfake scenarios. Employees should be trained to recognize the warning signs of potential deepfake attacks, such as unusual requests for sensitive information, pressure tactics that create artificial urgency, and subtle inconsistencies in speech patterns or behavior that might indicate synthetic media.

Organizations should implement multi-channel verification protocols for high-risk transactions. If someone receives a phone call requesting sensitive information or financial transactions, they should be required to verify the request through a separate communication channel, such as calling the requester back at a known number or confirming the request through an internal messaging system.

We also need to establish clear incident response procedures specifically for suspected deepfake attacks. This includes preserving audio or video evidence, documenting the specifics of the attack, and conducting thorough forensic analysis to understand the attack vector and prevent similar incidents in the future.

From a technical perspective, organizations should consider implementing voice biometric authentication systems for critical access points, though these systems are not foolproof and should be part of a layered security approach rather than a standalone solution.

Looking Ahead: The Evolving Threat Landscape

The threat landscape surrounding AI-generated content is evolving rapidly. We are already seeing threat actors experiment with real-time deepfake generation during live video calls, which presents an entirely new category of risk. Additionally, the integration of large language models with deepfake technology is creating scenarios where threat actors can not only replicate someone’s appearance and voice but also their communication style and knowledge base.

Regulatory frameworks are beginning to emerge, with some jurisdictions implementing laws specifically targeting malicious use of deepfake technology, but enforcement remains challenging given the global nature of these threats and the technical complexity involved in attribution.

Conclusion

Artificial Intelligence does not seem that it will be going away anytime soon, and while AI can be used in beneficial ways there is unfortunately an ongoing threat of AI being used maliciously by threat actors. It is therefore paramount that as Information Security professionals that we stay up to date to these type of attacks and what we can do to protect our people, organizations, and information systems from these dangers.

The deepfake threat is not a distant concern but a present reality that requires immediate attention and ongoing vigilance. We must approach this challenge with the same rigor and systematic thinking that we apply to other emerging cyber threats, recognizing that the human element remains both our greatest vulnerability and our strongest defense against these sophisticated attacks.
